FixSac5 Weekend Work Completed Ahead of Schedule
Motorists Enjoy the New Paved & Restriped Interstate Before the 4th of July Weekend
Sacramento County — The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), Norcal Paving a joint venture of A. Teichert and Son Inc. and Granite Construction Companies completed this weekend’s work for the Interstate 5 Corridor Enhancement (FixSac5) Project ahead of schedule.
The extended weekend closure began at 9:00 p.m. June 26th and was scheduled to end at 5:00 a.m. June 29th, however, crews were able to reopen the northbound lanes about nine hours early and the southbound lanes almost five and half hours early.
Crews closed the northbound lanes from Florin Road to north of Seamas Avenue, and southbound lanes from south of Florin Road to north of 35th Avenue for roadway excavation, removing concrete, finishing subgrade work, paving, striping and other construction activities. Two lanes remained opened in each direction while crews worked around the clock.
Although the scheduled work for this weekend’s extended closure finished early, crews are still working on the SAC 5 Corridor Enhancement (FixSac5) Project and motorists should expect ramp and lane closures this week from 8:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Monday through Thursday. Motorists expect delays and use State Route 99 as an alternate route. No work is scheduled for 4th of July weekend. For more information about this week’s work schedule visit https://dot.ca.gov/caltrans-near-me/district-3/d3-popular-links/d3-roadwork or www.FixSac5.com. Caltrans encourages the public to follow @CaltransDist3 and @FixSac5, and for more information about the project text ‘FixSac5’ to 58632.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) will be patrolling the project site ticketing motorists who are not adhering to the posted speed limit signs. The speed limit has been reduced to 55 MPH through the construction zone 24/7.
The closures and speed limit reductions are necessary for the safety of motorists and workers. Caltrans advices motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” – someone’s loved one is at work.
The $370 million SAC 5 Corridor Enhancement Project extends from about one mile south of Elk Grove Boulevard Overcrossing to the American River Bridge, and will rehabilitate pavement, construct new High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes, replace a pedestrian overcrossing, construct sound walls, install new fiber optic lines, new ramp meters and extend various entrance and exit ramps. Funding includes $48.3 million from SB 1. Although nighttime work is scheduled for most of the work, there is major traffic interfering work that will include 16 extended-weekend and daytime closures. The contract was awarded May 31, 2019 and construction began in late July 2019. The project is expected to be completed by December 2022.
The fourth extended weekend closure is scheduled for July 10.
Work is scheduled to begin as listed but subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment and/ or materials, and construction related issues.
