The Interstate 5 (I-5) Corridor Enhancement Project in Sacramento County extends from 1.1 mile south of the Elk Grove Boulevard Overcrossing to the American River Bridge. The project will rehabilitate pavement, construct new High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes, replace a pedestrian overcrossing, construct sound walls, install new fiber optic lines, new ramp meters and extend various entrance and exit ramps.

Once completed, the newly enhanced highway will:

  • Improve traffic operations by reducing congestion and travel time
  • Provide more reliable peak travel times
  • Provide travel time incentives for commuters to use carpools, van pools or buses in peak travel periods
  • Improve air quality by promoting carpool and vanpool

The ongoing work is part of the SAC 5 Corridor Enhancement Project to repair 67 lane miles of roadway and construct 23 miles of new High Occupancy Vehicle (carpool) lanes. The $370 million project extends from about one mile south of Elk Grove Boulevard Overcrossing to the American River Bridge. Crews will also replace a pedestrian overcrossing, construct sound walls, install new fiber optic lines, new ramp meters, repair exiting electrical and drainage systems, and extend various entrance and exit ramps. Funding includes $48.3 million from SB 1. The contract was awarded May 31, 2019 and construction began in late July 2019. The project is expected to be completed by December 2022.
