Weekend Partial Closure Scheduled for I-5

SACRAMENTO — The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is continuing a series of weekend partial highway closures for the SAC 5 Corridor Enhancement Project beginning this weekend. Work on southbound Interstate 5 will temporarily close the connector at the U.S. Highway 50 and I-5 interchange near downtown Sacramento for ongoing construction work. Signed detours will be in place, but Caltrans urges motorists to use State Route 99 as an alternate route to navigate around the closure and to plan for additional travel time.
Construction is set to begin at 9 p.m. Friday for the I-5 mainline and Highway 50 connectors, lasting through the weekend into early Monday morning. Motorists traveling on I-5 and Highway 50 should expect delays.
SCHEDULE:
9 p.m. Friday, June 18 through 5 a.m. Monday, June 21. (Around the clock work.)
LOCATIONS:
Southbound Sacramento I-5 and Highway 50 connector. (Two lanes will remain open for southbound I-5 traffic.)
RAMPS CLOSED:
Hwy 50 connector to southbound I-5
W Street on-ramp to southbound I-5
P Street on-ramp to southbound I-5
DETOUR:
From WB US50 continue WB to South River Road (Exit 3) to turn back around onto EB US50 or continue WB to West Sacramento and take Harbor Blvd (Exit 1B) to turn around onto EB US50.
DETOUR:
From EB US50 motorists will take I-5 North-Redding (Exit 4a) to Richards Blvd (Exit 520) to turn around.
The around the clock construction work will require heavy equipment and commercial
trucking. Nearby residents can expect loud construction type noise and commercial truck
back-up beeping noises during day and nighttime hours. The contractor is scheduled to
perform paving and striping.
This ongoing work is part of a $370 million project that added sound walls in 2020 and to
rehabilitate 67-lane miles of roadway, will build 23 miles of carpool lanes, and improve the
existing electrical and drainage systems along this corridor.
Motorists traveling through the work zone should expect lane restrictions and should be
aware of commercial work vehicles traveling in and out of the area. The work zone speed
limit has been reduced to 55 mph and the California Highway Patrol will be present for
traffic enforcement.
