FixSac5 Frequently Asked Questions

Updated throughout the project.

When is the FixSac5 Project expected to be completed?

The FixSac5 project is estimated to be completed by December 2022.

As California’s Highways get busier and the population increases, I-5 in Sacramento requires continuous upkeep and damage repair. During the construction project period, repairs and repaving the damaged roadways will continue as optimal weather conditions allow to expand and improve our local highway for years to come.

When is the Casilada Pedestrian Overcrossing (POC) expected to be completed?

The old pedestrian and bike overcrossing at Casilada Way on I-5 was demolished in February 2021 to make way for the new, ADA-compliant overcrossing. The new Casilada Pedestrian Overcrossing (POC) was completed and opened to the public in April 2022.

Why are ramps impacted by the extended weekend closures opening later than 5 a.m.?

Like any construction project, unexpected equipment issues can arise, potentially delaying the reopening of ramps. We apologize for any inconvenience, and recommend having an alternate route planned in case of reopening delays.

How will an HOV lane benefit me?

An HOV lane can benefit all commuters, even those who do not carpool on a regular basis. During peak travel hours, those who use ride-sharing or carpooling options will have the opportunity to use the newly added HOV lanes, clearing up room on the rest of the highway and helping manage roadway congestion. During non-peak commute hours, HOV lanes are open to all motorists.

Where will the new HOV lanes start and end?

The FixSac5 project will construct 23 miles of HOV lanes starting one mile south of Elk Grove Boulevard overcrossing to the American River Bridge.

What safety measures are in place in construction zones?

Caltrans’ highest priority is safety. Work zones are typically marked by signs, cones, barrels, channeling devices, barriers, pavement markings, and/or work vehicles. Work zones may also include flashing amber lights to signify a construction area.

You can also help keep work zones safe for motorists and highway workers. Slow to 55 MPH in the work zone and Move Over a lane if safe to do so. Learn more about highway safety at http://beworkzonealert.com/work-zone-safety.html.

What are the alternate routes to avoid potential FixSac5 delays?

To help reduce traffic around Sacramento, motorists and truckers are strongly encouraged to use State Highway 99 as an alternate route

To minimize traffic delays, use alternative transportation such as public transportation (while maintaining social distancing), ride sharing, walking, or biking to your destination.

How much does this project cost? Where does this funding come from?

FixSac5 is part of the $370 million SAC 5 Corridor Enhancement Project, which will repair 67 lane miles of roadway and construct 23 miles of new High Occupancy Vehicle (carpool) lanes.

This full project cost includes funding from State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP), SB1-Solutions for Congested Corridors Program (SHOPP/SCCP), STA Local Measure A Tax and ACOG Congestion Management and Air Quality Improvement Program (CMAQ).

I’m concerned about the temporary striping or other safety measures near the work zone. Where can I submit feedback?

Caltrans values your input and takes precautions to ensure a safe work zone for motorists and crews. If you have feedback about a FixSac5 construction zone, please submit feedback at https://fixsac5.com/contact-us/.
